Increased uncertainty in the world has brought increased energy prices. It has never been more important to try and save energy both for homeowners and business owners. Not only does this help our planet but it also has large financial incentives. In a cold climate like Fife, where heating and lighting tend to be on for a large part of the year, small changes in behaviour can add up to large savings in cost.

A great tip is to install LED lighting as this is much more efficient than traditional bulbs. LEDs can consume less than 80% of the energy of traditional bulbs in some cases!

Another, often overlooked tip, is to power off unused devices when not needed. This includes lights and heaters especially. It is very easy to get into the habit of walking around the house, turning on lights as you go but not turning them off again. Very soon you have lots of energy being used that doesn’t need to be.

Anything with a heating element uses a LOT of energy. Only boil enough water in the kettle that you need. If you are just having a single cup of tea then it is incredibly wasteful to fill the kettle to the top and boil it all. Similarly, if you are cooking dinner, don’t leave the oven on for 20 minutes to “let it heat up”. Make sure you keep an eye on it and use it as soon as it’s at the correct temperature.
